Seedings are determined by the UEFA co-efficients from 92-97. The following table details the competition's basic structure. Note that because Borussia Dortmund, winners of last year's competition automatically qualify for the Champions League stage, Galatasaray, the champions from Turkey were down-graded to the qualifying round - so UEFA's decision to give Turkey 8th place over Greece did not help Gala at all but have helped Besiktas - they get to take part in EC1.
